Plant Variety Protection: A Consideration of Genetic Relationships

چکیده
Increased interest and debate over ownership of intellectual property (e.g., plant proprietary rights) has arisen in agriculture because the protection of research products is necessary to provide incentive for investment. Any unique, documentable invention (a product, service, or process) having potential use in commerce can be considered intellectual property. Intellectual property is any recorded “invention” arising from “new products, new services and new manufacturing processes no less than artistic works or scientific advances ... which can be bought and sold” (Nicholson Green Paper, 1983). In agriculture, unique inventions can become the property of individuals or organizations. For instance, improved plant varieties are inventions developed by breeders who are skilled in the art/ science of genetic manipulation. Inventions, including varieties, gene processes, or genetic constructs, developed by plant breeders or geneticists can be protected by law. Concern for comprehensive remuneration, however, has not always been an important issue in varietal development. For example, crossing and selection were practiced by plantsman from around 1870 onwards (Mastenbroek, 1988). At the turn of this century, selections in many crop species were still made from landraces. During the evolution and refinement of breeding techniques between 1900 to 1960, many methods (e.g., backcross and pedigree selection) were developed that led to improved homogeneous and homozygous varieties (Mastenbroek, 1988).

Characterization and Phylogenetic Analysis of Magnaporthe spp. strains on Various Hosts in Iran
Background: Populations of Magnaporthe, the causal agent of rice blast disease, are pathotypically and genetically diverse and therefore their interaction with different rice cultivars and also antagonistic microorganisms are very complicated. Objectives: The objectives of the present study were to characterize phylogenetic relationships of 114 native Magnaporthe strains, isolated from rice a...
متن کاملAssessment of Genetic Structure and Variation of Native Berberis Populations of Khorasan Provinces (Iran) Using AFLP Markers Versus Morphological Markers
Seedless barberry (Berberis vulgaris L. var. asperma) is one of the few crops that is only cultivated in eastern parts of Iran. As a new crop there has not been any study to identify phylogenetic relationships of this plant with other related species existing in Iran. In this study, Amplification fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers based on four selected primer combinations (EcoRI/Tru1I...
متن کاملGenetic Diversity among Plant Pathogenic Streptomyces Strains from Potato Fields in Northwest of Iran
Different species of Streptomyces are common in most types of soil. Some certain species are plant pathogenic especially on potato. This study was conducted to evaluate genetic diversity among some local Streptomyces spp. strains isolated from soil and infected tubers in potato farms in northwest of Iran. Repetitive DNA elements (BOX, ERIC and REP) as genetic markers were used for diversity stu...
متن کاملPhylogenetic relationships of anamorphic form of some Pleosporalean genera based on analysis of ITS rDNA and RPB2
Pleosporaceae is an important Dothideomycetes family. To elucidate relationships among some selected anamorphic pleosporalean taxa, their Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) and RNA polymerase second largest subunit (RPB2) were sequenced and compared. Phylogenetic analyses of both ITS and RPB2 regions were almost similar and generally congruent with previously described phylogenies and morphology...
متن کاملAnalysis of Soil Populations of Aspergillus flavus Link. from Pistachio Orchards in Iran for Vegetative Compatibility
One hundred-thirty soil isolates of A. flavus were collected from commercial pistachio orchards in two main production regions including Rafsanjan (Kerman Province, south-eastern of Iran) and Damghan (Semnan Province, central north of Iran) and assayed for vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs). The sixteen and twenty VCGs were identified for 41 and 37 nit-mutant producing isolates of A. flavus...
